The story of Two in a Bush began long before the first bottle was made.

Hetta van Deventer-Terblanche had been carrying the idea with her since 2016. As her two sons entered their teenage years, their growing love of sugary sodas presented a practical problem: she wanted to offer them an alternative that she could feel better about serving.

At the same time, Hetta felt ready for a new venture and was actively looking for the right opportunity. She could not find a cordial that brought together everything she wanted—real ingredients, less sugar, no artificial sweeteners and, just as importantly, genuinely good flavour. The gap was there, and the idea kept returning.

After dropping her children at school, Hetta regularly went for an early-morning run with a friend. She often spoke about the drink she wanted to create, until one morning her friend stopped her mid-run and told her that it was time to stop talking and start acting: she had to take the leap.

So she did.

With a background in food and cultural history, Hetta was naturally drawn to rooibos. Grown naturally in only one part of the world—the Cederberg region of South Africa—it carries a remarkable connection to place and heritage. Its naturally caffeine-free character, gentle flavour and subtle sweetness also made it an ideal base for fruit and botanical blends.

But Hetta never imagined building Two in a Bush alone. She believes deeply in friendship, community and the value of building something together in a way that can also enrich the lives of those around it. With that belief at the heart of the venture, she invited her friend and business partner, Marie-Louise Oosthuizen, to join the journey.

The first bottles of Two in a Bush Rooibos Cordial were produced in Hetta’s kitchen. From these early beginnings, Hetta and Marie-Louise worked together to shape Two in a Bush into the brand it is today: modern South African drinks made with real, carefully brewed organic rooibos and created for everyday enjoyment.

For us, this has never been about making exaggerated wellness promises. It is about making a better everyday choice easier—and far more delicious. Our drinks are naturally caffeine-free, low in sugar and made without artificial sweeteners. Above all, they are created to taste good, because choosing more thoughtfully should never mean compromising on enjoyment.

Two in a Bush is rooted in place, heritage and flavour—but it is also a story about friendship, community and what can happen when an idea is finally given the chance to grow.
